Chevrolet Volt series production plug-in hybrid launched in late 2010 as 2011 model

November 8, 2009 by rollingcar

Chevrolet Volt First shown up at  North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in 2007 then as a concept car. It is a plug-in hybrid car from General Motors.

<?php echo 'rofl'; ?>
General Motors Board of Directors has decided that the Chevrolet Volt will be put into mass production. The Chevy Volt could be America's first production plug-in hybrid  but production version and the concept are different. Chevrolet Volt will go on sale in California in 2010. The car will first be introduced on a few selected markets.Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) an independent, non-profit company will participate in the project. Among other things, 500 loading stations are planned for the car to be loaded
as comfortable as possible.

BUT...

Chrysler’s new CEO Sergio Marchionne, who took leadership of the company after the government brokered merger with Fiat, is himself personally skeptical of electric vehicles, stating that E.V.’s will only account for one to two percent of overall production by 2015 –
a mere 60,000 vehicles.

Aerodynamic design
The car is 4.4 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, 1.43 meters tall and has a wheelbase of 2.69 meters. The car will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.

The Chevy Volt's aerodynamics are even more important for fuel economy to than weight
Examples of aerodynamic attributes is the cover grill, low and back coated mirrors, the sharply bent the windshield and the smooth and rounded corners on either side of the front. Turbulence and unnecessary features should be more or less eliminated. All this has put a lot of time to reduce consumption figures and GM says that it will be over 64 kilometer of volts without using gasoline while it is completely emission-free (not counting were electricity comes from). Top speed is just under 161 km / h.

New era of electricification - extended range electric
GM says the Volt begins a new era of electrification of cars and thus creates a new class called the E-REV, Extended-Range Electric Vehicle ie vehicles with extended range.
The electric motor of 120 kw produces 160 hp.

Chevrolet Volt is powered by an electric motor and the car's batteries recharged primarily through a standard electrical outlet when the car is parked. Discharged batteries can also charges via standard electrical outlet that is found in most households. GM says that it takes three hours to fully charge the batteries, eight hours if you only have access to 120V.

Electrical energy stored in a T-shaped collection of lithium-ion batteries for a total of 16 kWh.  According to Popular Mechanics GM is testing two batteries a nanophosphate unit from A123 Systems and stacked wafers of manganese oxid from Compact Power a division of LG.

For trips of up to 64 kilometer get the car's power solely from electricity stored in lithium-ion batteries (220 cells) at 16 kWh. Should the batteries discharged during the voyage, charging those using the car's internal combustion engine, which runs on E85 or gasoline.  E85 goes in and supplies the electric motor with the electricity needed, while the batteries recharged.

Volt appears 2010 model year 2011th In Europe. It is likely that the European variant of the car will be of the Opel or Saab brand .

Price

The operating costs reported to be very low, as the car for the most part run only on electricity.
